Olympic Swimmers

A few years ago I had the opportunity to photograph Olympians living in the Washington, DC area for The Washington Post Magazine.  I had the honor of photographing Tom Dolan and Crissy Perham (Ahmann), two very highly decorated swimmers.

U.S. Olympic Swimmer Tom Dolan won a gold medal and silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics and a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics. He held the world record in the 400 m individual medley longer than any other swimmer in history.

Olympic swimmer Crissy Perham (Ahmann) won two gold medals and one silver in the Barcelona games in 1992.

Now that it’s March Madness I thought I would share some images from a long-term project of mine.   Watching the games being played in huge arenas often has me wondering where many of the players got their start.  Not all of them are from a large city, but I bet many are.  Inner city basketball courts a not known to be in the best condition or even in the most ideal locations.  But since the sport is so popular with many kids and adults, and space is at a premium, courts will be set up anywhere there is space.  Usually not in the best locations, but good enough for a game of basketball.  Here are a few examples of “arenas” I recently photographed.
